My special day filming a swarm that is trying to find a new place to live.
Updated: May 8, 2020
I had a wonderful day today watching in live the born of a new swarm.
When there is a large population in the hive, the bees build queen cells and protect them so that the queen does not kill them. When the new queens are born they tend to be stronger than the old queen, therefore the old queen leaves the hive with a group of bees forming a swarm. This new swarm perches temporarily around the radio while the scouring bees will search for a hole in a tree or other box where they will form a new hive. This is the way the mother of the hive renews the queen and the old one forms a new swarm ensuring the continuity of the species.
In the video above we can see the bees flying around and waiting for the queen to find the correct place to perches, ones the queen decides, the others bees will follow and protect her.
The picture below shows that them finally decided to be in a tree next to a bottle of water. The scouring bees now need to find the place to start the new hive.
